3:43 pm - April Fools starts 1 April. Obvious, eh?
|
I last did April Fools seriously in 2006. This was my break down:
Current Goal= 5000
On the projects:
A Beautiful Burning: 1260/1000 MET! No Halfway Man: 0/1000 Unicornus: 0/1000 Nano 2003: 0/1000 Sock Monkey Versus Mr. Mushasi: 0/1000
New Projects:
Letters: 243/??? Ghosts in London: 364/???
TOTAL SO FAR:
1867/5000
This year, I'm shooting for 10000 words. Unicornus has been completed. The others still languish, unfinished. This is a framework for divinging the work in the event that I find myself unable to just push out 10k on a particular project. The issue is not lack of ideas, but rather, wanting to do it all at the same time and so being unable to do nothing. ABB is obviously the prioity.
Current Goal= 10000
On the projects:
A Beautiful Burning: 0/5000 No Halfway Man: 0/1000 Nano 2003: 0/1000 Sock Monkey Versus Mr. Mushasi: 0/1000 Bringing Remembrance: 0/0
New Projects:
Letters: 0/??? Remembrance short story: 0/2000
TOTAL SO FAR:
0/10000

I win. Go me.
Alas, this is one of those years where the finish line looked so grand that I hardly noticed how surreal it all looks, so I suspect that, after the first edit, we'll be dropping back pretty severely.

4:07 pm - Icon Love
|
There haven't been a whole lot of icons offerred up this year, so when a nice person on milwaukeenano mentioned the lack, I thought I'd sit down and do some simple icons while making my personal set.
The following icons all feature Calliope, the Muse of Eloquence and Epic poetry. Most NaNo icons tend to go for pictures of typewriters and pens and so forth, so I thought Calliope might be a nice change. If you like them, please feel free to gank them, but please do credit them to leesiegirl and let me know if you grabbed 'em. They're pretty simple, but the art is so pretty, there wasn't anything I could do to improve them. ;-)
And, of course, please upload them to your journals--please don't use my bandwidth.

 | You scored as C.G. Jung. You are more of a spiritualist than would be immediately apparent. Some of your notions are questioned by the cynical, but deep down you know the human consciousness is more than the flesh and tissue can account for. You tend to take a scientific observationist look on matters the average person wouldn't even begin to analyze. You personally are responsible for most of the ideas that are floating around in modern psychologist's/psychic's paltry little skulls. On the down side, you tend to be associated with that asshole Freud.

I've hardly had anything to say here this year, I've been terrible about it, primarily because I have limited attention right now. But I'm doing okay right now:

3:47 pm - Stuff to get done before nano
|
I've spent a good part of the day cleaning out the area around my computer. It tends to get pretty messy, as it often does in any geek's house, but my personal mess is intensified by my tendency to keep bills, bank statements, etcetera, piled around me for the two years or so that must pass before I feel comfortable throwing them away.
Michael bought a shredder to help with this issue.
I also got a new ink cartridge into the printer--an HP 26 cartridge, which should clue you in to just how old my printer is--switched out the old monitor for a new one that I can actually read, and rearranged the computer so that it's not quite so difficult to work with.
Other things that need to be done:
- House in reasonable order
Library books returned & fine paid This is done, and yes, it is the same batch of books I was talking about in this entry. Mercifully, my fines were a mere $21. Hope the WAPL gets to buy a book with that.
- Put together index cards for plot line.
- Finish setting up writing area.
- Gather up several unfinished works in the hope that I'll work on them after I get 50 K finished early on Nano 2006. A chick can dream, can't she?

9:44 pm - Anyone out there stretching themselves, genre-wise?
|
Greetings!
I do have a question. I've won and lost Nano an even number of times, and so, by now, I thought I'd use Nano to grow in a different direction--I already know I can pound out a coherent story of 50K or more in a month. This year, I thought I'd try writing outside my comfort zone, far away from my usual genres. I haven't attempted horror since I was 13 years old, some *mumble mumble* years ago. I hardly read horror anymore, so I'm looking at pounding out something that terrifies in a real-world way without stepping into blood and gore--the things that made me stop reading horror. Too much pulp, not enough fiction. Further, I've decided to really push it by making it 21st century reality and have the book narrated by a male character, two other things I haven't put serious effort into in years.
Is there anyone else out there stepping outside their comfort zone?

11:31 am - Time is on the Hoof. Again.
|

So, I've signed up to be the Milwaukee area ML again, although all the bheer ghods know it's nearly impossible to get the Milwaukee bunch any kind of cohesive. I'm just lovin' those lost causes, and this is a lost cause I can love without causing any sort of soul bleed on my part.
I'm toying with the zokuto clause this year. Or maybe I'll start on the idea I had during April Fools. I dunno, I have to define my priorities. Then I'll know which way to go.

7:59 am - April Fools
|
http://aprilfoolsnovels.com/
I'm giving this a try, particularly since I intended to mess with NaNoEdMo and didn't get to it, being too busy with the new job an' all. I've set myself a very modest goal of 5000 words over the month of April, as I have already committed myself to a WIP list (see my primary blog, third section of this entry, although I am already thinking or replacing some of these WIPs with other WIPs).
I'd like to add 1k words to each of the stalled NaNovels and spend about 1k on a new sock monkey story for the website.

Maybe I'll try this.
I'm also thinking about doing the Zokutou Clause for the next Nanowrimo. Dunno. I would feel uber winner like if all I did was finish off the various works I started and could not finish during Nano, including those side projects. You know, the "I started it, it didn't work, I started over," things that accumulate during the November madhouse.
The Zokutou Clause became a whole lot more appealing when my laptop took a dive off the counter at work and has not functioned since. While most of my Nano primary works are backed up in 2-3 places, several of the incidental works are there, as well as the works I switched to this last November--the several children's stories--and the resume I was updating. That's really frustrating, because I was working on that from the CV point of view, which means that a lot of work is gone if I can't get that stuff off that computer. If I can, well, then, best to get it finished.

11:17 pm - Oh, well.
|
Not this year. And I'm hard pressed to be disappointed in myself. I'll tell you why in a second. :-)
Reasons why I actually feel good about not hitting 50K this year:
- I don't have 25k of insane plot to cut out and rewrite, a problem rampant in 2004.
- I did not use the "slantwords" trick, something I picked up on C. Batty's suggestion, to wit: if you find yourself editing yourself, don't erase those words, italicize them and include them in your word count. You wrote them; they count. While it was a delightful exercise in quashing the voice of the inner editor, it made the 2003 Nano a nightmare to edit. Everything that is on the paper so far is meant to be a part of the raw draft.
- I made myself write a story for and actually enter it in a small writing contest. This is a major step forward for me, far more important than writing crap just to be able to say I got 50k spit out in November. And, well, I did get 50 K out in November, it just wasn't all for this novel.
- I like this novel way too much to treat it with anything less than my full attention, and I've just been too busy--family, Boar's Head A&S stuff, work, and even some of the time I had to give as the local Nano municipal liason. For once, I think it's a really good story. Publishable or not, I want it to be something that will be worth three reads*.
So congratulations to those who crossed the line; I think it may take me another month or two to complete my story. And I'm glad about that.

Random comments from the writing day:
--Writing to the Titantic soundtrack right now. It sounds like he's playing one of those stupid electronic keyboards with the sound wave set to "choir." Ack. Note to self: if I'm ever a conductor/composer in this life, I hereby swear that I will never ever torment the listening public with music played on the "choir" setting of my Cassio 100 keyboard.
--Oh, no! I'm about to kill the High King! That wasn't supposed to happen yet!
--I am being forced to confront the fact that I am a slow writer. :;sigh::
--Goddammit! The three wyrden just acted on their own and are trying for a coup instead of being the alliance protesters I wanted them to be! Hell, I don't even need the alliance now!
--Oh, god, I am about to kill off a woman's husband. The plot needs it, but I still feel like shit. I actually feel *guilty.* This poor woman. Aryiana, I'm sorry. Love, Yer Ghoddess.
--Setting pop-tarts on top of steaming tea to warm them doesn't work, it merely makes them soggy. Oops
--I simply can not turn the internal editor off this time.
--Nano's word counter gives me an extra 80 words if I upload a .doc file and takes away about 20 words if I upload a text file
--4.One thing that is killing me about this story is the fact that it's a lot of story to cram into a mere 50k. I find myself doing a lot of telling instead of showing, and it's frustrating. Always remember: it can be further edited after November, LeesieGirl.

11:27 pm - Ah. Meh. Gawd.

So, still behind, but I am not displeased with this progress. Considering where I was at this point last year (wondering when I was going to have time to cram in the next 10k-in-one-go session) I can't complain too badly about the fact that I'm no worse behind than I was in 2003.
I'm sufferring from boughts of writer's block. This year, when that happens, I've been forcing myself to work on my web pages; that way, aty least I am writing.
Well, off to bed, so that I can get up for my morning writing session. This morning's writing session produced nothing fictional, but I did do some editing on other projects, so I can't be sorry, because the time wasn't wasted. :-)

Had a little problem with writer's block, resulting in a couple of
unproductive nights earlier this week.
My plan is to cross 11k by Sunday 10 PM. That may be hard, as there are
plans. So I'm off to bed now, hoping that nothing interferes, and that
I can get up early enough to be all writerly and still have a life.

A Beautiful Burning:
Sadly, the shipbrook meter doesn't appear to be updating this year. The little red dot that moves along the scale to track where you *should* be isn't tracking, it's still set on 100% from Nano2004. Oh, well.
I'd really like to get finished fast this year. I want that every year, eh? I'll have to do more to succeed.
My friend Jodi has inadvertantly challenged me to include a pirate in my story. I think I can, without altering things toooo much. We'll see. ;-)
